A Moment of Precognition: The Invisible Man
Those Darn Hush Puppies
I hate gray Hush Puppies (shoes), but I spent a year staring at them. There appeared to be something attached to the Hush Puppies, the attachment made guttural sounds, it seemed to be speaking German.
Those darn Hush Puppies and that guttural sound haunted me all summer long. My eyes were practically crossing from staring at the shoes and my ears were assaulted by the spitting of German sounds.
This is my way of saying that I was darn bored with my Linear Algebra Class. The class was one of those “take this class and another one and we will bestow upon you a degree in Mathematics”.
Hallelujah!!! It was almost over.
So I sat and stared and listened and tore up all my notes since when the professor finished his hour long dissertation on the subject of Linear Albegra, he would stop, look at the blackboard and say, “Maybe you should not write that down. I think it might have a mistake.”
My hand was sore from taking notes, I filled in 10 pages of “Maybe It Is Wrong” lectures every day that summer.
Over and over on those hot summer days, when I wanted to be at the beach in Galveston, I just waded up my notes and tossed them at the nearest trash can.
“The Invisible Man”
One dayI decided to ignore the notetaking and just look around the room. Since I sat on the first row, looking at my classmates was not an easy chore. I tried to see down the line of “front row gets an A” students. There was one student I really could not see much more than his foot. I tried to lean forward more, but those dadgum, ugly “gray Hush Puppies” were practically touching me. All I saw of “The Invisible Man” was his shadow on the floor.
And then a thought passed through my mind. “I don’t know who he is, but I am going to marry “The Invisible Man”. It was not attraction or any feelings, it was a fact just as concrete as all those mathematical equations I was looking at.
I was going to marry “The Invisible Man”. And that was that!
I don’t think that I had ever had a precognitive thought of what the future was going to be before that day. I had glimpsed my future but I did not even know who he was OR what he looked like.
For the rest of that semester, “The Invisible Man” proceeded to totally ignore me. I never got the chance to meet him.
Living In the Old Folks Home
When I finally met him after I had my degree, I found out that he had blond hair and blue eyes and was rather, shall we say, cute. Within that year I married “The Invisible Man”, I moved to a military base in Biloxi, Mississippi, where we moved into an Old Folks Home. The residents who probably all were approaching 100 years old stared at us wondering who those young wippersnappers were who had suddenly landed amongst them.
The Proposition
Shhh! This is our little secret. I was laying out on the beach one day. The beach was only a few steps from the Old Folks Home. I was just laying there enjoying the sun, fully clothed in my maternity attire when I felt a shadow of coolness against my skin. I opened my eyes and saw an airman staring down at me. He stopped to talk AND THEN I was propositioned by that Air Force enlisted man. I was rather shocked. How does an enlisted man, of the very lowest rank possible, proposition the wife of an officer, when she is 8 1/2 months pregnant.
Men!
A Flurry Of Activity
Two weeks later my first son was born, and I quickly got kicked out of the Old Folks Home. I don’t think they like babies. But the year wasn’t over yet. After I got kicked out of the Old Folks Home I had to move back to LaMarque, Texas where I had grown up. My baby, “The Little Invisible Man” and I stayed for a few weeks and then it was off to another military base in White Sands, New Mexico. It was the most eventful year of my life.
AND it all began with that “first precognitive thought” when I wondered who the “Invisible Man” was because I was “absolutely sure” I was going to marry him.
Through the years, I have had other precognitive experiences, but I will say that knowing my future was with “The Invisible Man” was the strongest precognitive experience I have ever had.
