William Gibson and Cyberpunk

To describe how I descended into “The World of Science Fiction”, I suppose I really should start at the beginning.  It was 2002 when the Rebel in me showed its ugly face.  I longed to get a Harley and roar through the streets, feeling all the power of a billion horses galloping beneath me.

The Harley dealership burst my balloon with a bang.  “Go to Honda, Short Person”, they said.  “Harley’s are not for little people.”

I was crushed.

“But the Honda people are shown drinking lemonade on the cover of their brochure,” I whined, “and horror upon horror, they are wearing logo-ed collar-ed golf shirts.”

“I want to roar,” I yelled.  The Harley people promptly escorted me out of the door.

Well, I reasoned, if I could not be part of a Harley gang, I would be a “Punk Rocker.”  I went out and bought myself an electric guitar.  I turned the volume up as loud as I could and screamed at the top of my lungs.  I even considered spiked hair with high-optic purple coloring.  AND I subscribed to all the Rock Guitar magazines.

I wanted to know everything Punk so I Googled the word “Punk.”  Up popped the author William Gibson and his SciFi book, Neuromancer.

On this blog we will look at several of Gibson’s books and ask ourselves, “Is the world he describes in his books the real world?”  “Can we do the the so-called SciFi things that his characters do?”

We will also look at Star Trek, and Star Wars and SciFi books and The Matrix and anything else we can think of, always questioning, “Is This Reality?”
